"Consider the lilies of the field..."
This is the Gospel text for this Sunday. I find it interesting to consider that image, and that promise, at the same time that I prepare for a funeral on Wednesday for a woman who died very unexpectedly this weekend of an accident. A woman, by the way, who loved to garden, and who did trust in God's care.
The family is handling it pretty well, but I'm not sure how much of that is still shock. When the reality of it sets in, they will have questions. One of her sons and his family attend one of my congregations. When they attend worship this Sunday, will reality have begun to set in? What will they be thinking and feeling when they hear "consider the lilies"? This sermon will require some deft handling in writing and a careful touch in preaching.
